Up until about 4 months ago I was a regular user of fish oil.I have been on it religiously for over 3 years.Anyone reading this and considering the krill oil most likely already knows the vast benefits of fish oil and its omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.Everyone should be taking fish oil whether you or your family has a history of heart disease or not.Its circulatory support and cholesterol reducing benefits are well known and documented.I thought I was pretty set for life with a regular regimen of regular fish oil.

Enter krill oil.I came across an article about it in the local paper here and was very intrigued about the benefits and claims over regular fish oil that I somehow had not gotten wind of up till then. I decided to go on the web and do some further research on my own.The results were very much the same everywhere I went, as well as most impressive. Krill, or more precisely, Antarctic krill, are tiny shrimp-like crustaceans rich in an oil that contains the same omega-3 fatty acids in regular fish oil, as well as antioxidant pigments. (Specifically Astaxanthin. Its actually what gives crustaceans such as lobster and shrimp its reddish pink color). Antioxidants protect our body cells from damage from unstable substances (called free radicals)that are thought to contribute to certain chronic diseases. Unlike many other antioxidants, Astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier, where it could theoretically protect the eye, brain and central nervous system from free radical damage.Because of krill oil's different chemical structure, its omega 3 fatty acids are also more readily absorbed by our bodies than those in fish oil. A sort of deep sea "chaser" for the whole formula to get into your system faster if you will. Also another advantage of krill oil being absorbed differently is no more so called fish burps.A common complaint of people using fish oil supplements.(Although personally I have never experienced one.All my burps are naturally induced it seems).

The many benefits of fish oil are both covered well, and extended in krill oil.Studies have shown that fish oils well known cholesterol reducing capabilities pale in comparison to krill oil.One study I ran into several times online showed over a 30% reduction in "bad" cholesterol, and over a 40% rise in "good" cholesterol on a test done with 120 people.Half of them being given a placebo.Rather astounding figures considering regular fish oils same percentages were about 5% and 4% respectively. In addition to its excellent cholesterol fighting attributes, preliminary research suggests krill oil may help reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).(Think of it!) Finally, a study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined krill oil (300 mg daily) compared to a placebo and found that krill oil was effective at reducing arthritis symptoms and inflammation.(This I can attest to personally. The arthritis in my knee that has been painful to me for many years is not just much better, but all but gone). Now Foods Neptune Krill Oil is the brand I use simply because I have used several Now brands in the past and have always been very satisfied with them.Their price is always very reasonable, and I can truthfully say that their krill oil is no exception. The Now krill is a hefty dose of 500 mg, as well as 300 mg of omega 3 acids. (Don't be fooled by the lower dose of omega 3 in any krill oil.It is a more standardized dose that is delivered more quickly and efficiently).Like fish oil, I tend to stick with the cheapest I can find that is widely available.I am yet to see any kind of definitive study that proves that any brand of fish or krill oil is any better than any other, at any price. If you have another brand of krill oil in mind you favor, or brand of fish oil you have always liked, by all means search out your own favorite and check out the price of their krill oil.If its in line with the Now, by all means buy it from them. It's far more important that one begin and sustain a supplement of krill oil than it is to choose any one brand over another.I chose Now simply because its easily available locally, as well as here on Amazon at a very fair price. One last thing you should know about the source of all krill oil as a supplement. One company, "Neptune Technologies", a Canadian company, holds the patent for all krill oil extraction, and is the sole distributor of all krill oil sold in all supplements containing it.(Hard to believe?, check it out yourself. It's true).Just one last, and most important reason not to spend any more of your hard earned dollars than you have to for a krill oil supplement.

In conclusion, if you are already a user of fish oil, and a loyal disciple of its well known benefits, I strongly suggest you upgrade yourself to krill oil the next time your present bottle runs dry. A number of studies have shown that krill oil is tremendously effective in reducing LDL-cholesterol, raising HDL-cholesterol, and lowering blood sugar. It has been shown to be effective in treating the pain and inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis and aches and pains in general. Think of krill oil as delivering the very nucleus of all the fish oil benefits in a more efficient, better prepared proprietary blend, over your sentimental favorite fish oil. The daily regimen of krill oil is lower than the standard 3 a day of fish oil.The Now brand suggests 2 a day, but I have lowered it to one and have found the lower dose results to be excellent. Start yourself on their recommended dose and then decide for yourself. And give it time to work.Patience is a virtue and krill oil is not a miracle drug.It takes a month or so to really start feeling results from it.

By all means, do some research on your own, and then come back and buy some. You will be rewarded with a longer and better life for it...
